An analysis system of a vehicle handling performance is developed. The analysis system can simulate driving tests to evaluate the vehicle handling performance. A 3-dimensional nonlinear vehicle model with a steering system is proposed. Based on this vehicle model, driving tests are simulated. With the analysis system, the handling performance of a large bus that has a front and rear rigid axle is evaluated. The influence of de sign parameters on handling performance is investigated
The vehicle model has 13 degrees of freedom which are 10 degrees of motion in sprung and unsprung mass and 3 degrees of freedom in steering system. A driver model was developed using PID and fuzzy controller to steer the vehicle along a prescribed path during a closed loop simulation. Good agreement was obtained between experimental and simulated results in single lane change.
To evaluate the vehicle handling performance, the vehicle handling characteristics were classified as follows: (I) steering characteristics and characteristic velocity; (2) response time and amplification; (3) frequency response. The influence of front suspension spring stiffness, damping constant, steering overall ratio, and rear tire concerning stiffness on handling performance was investigated. Results of the developed program were compared with those of DADS, a commercial program for multibody dynamics analysis. Good agreement was obtained between results of the developed program and DADS in a parameter study
