The concept of human rights has been formed and extended in the process ofcoping with violence throughout its history. Sorel discerned violence from power.According to him, the state order accompanying authority and obedience tookplace on the side of power, and the emancipation from bondage took place on theside of violence. By defining the increasing trends of the proletariat revolution, heput a high moral value on socialist violence in that it may save the world inmodern times.
Arendt contended that the critical distinction between power and violence lies in that violence is completely under the control of number while power is not subject to change due to the number to a certain extent. He argued that power requires a lot of supporters but that violence plays a role as an instrument of itself. Violence can be justified only through the intention as it is a means to an end. However, power can grow naturally when people join hands to take action, thereby it attains justice in itself.
Benjamin paid attention to ethical matters to explain the instrument of violence with respect to them. Violence can be ratified only when it is concerned with ethical matters. It is only an instrument to accomplish the goals on the one hand, and the legal orders should be the essential, fundamental aim, as well as an instrument, on the other hand. It can be meaningless to identify the concepts of violence and human rights considering that the issue was an outcome of an era when people envisioned a state of utopian socialism through the proletariatre volution and brought focus not into the physical violence in the real world but into the metaphysical violence.
Although these three controversialists in the twentieth century had distinctive perspectives in the discourse on violence, they held a common standpoint in that they all denied violence on the st
reets.
