Intalke port injecion type and in-cylinder injection type hydrogen fuel suply systems were designed, assembled and adapted to the single cylinder research engine to understand the performance and emission characteristics of hydrogen fueled engine according to the mixture formation.
At the lou load condition, extemal mixing method wiht the intake port injection was superior in thermal efficiency and engine operation stability. At the high load condition, internal mixing method with the in-cylinder injection was superior to the external mixing. At the engine test with the condition of throttle valve control, the engine was operated more stable and more efficiently when the fuel-air equivalence ratio was maintained above some level in spite of pumping loss, due to the stable combustion. This trend was showed in both cases, intake port injection and in-cylinder injection.
The hydrogen fueled engine can be operated more efficiently with the in-cylinder injection at higher load and with the intake port injection at lower load. Throttle control at low load condition makes the hydrogen engine more efficient.
