The modem poetry describes the reality of things and man not actually, with a familiar viewpoint, or in the way of triteness. It makes them unfamiliar and transform them into grotesqueries. Poetry is the deviation for freedom: even though it inevitably accepts the remains of the reality, it doesn't take the so called reality any more as standards. Thanks to the poetry, the reality is released from the systematic space, time, objectivity, and established perception. Therefore, the modernity should be based on the negative perception of phenomena and search for the new world. The perceptio of modern poetry is important in such negative categories. Kyoungrin Kim is the major character among the members of "New Poetics", "Hubangi", and "DIAL". This paper investigates the modernity which the members of "Hunbangi" perceive through their works. There are two main ways in which the modernity takes shape in their poems. One is the discontinuous outlook on the world which is a consequence of some matters, that is, nihilism after war, skepticism about existence, and severance between the self and the world caused by urban civilization and mooernization. The other is the matter of words: rhetorical consideration. It is the most important aspect in the modernity. The poets search for a new viewpoint of language, in that they disjoint the words' meaning by using Pun and create new meanings from Depaysement. Thus, this paper examines the modernity closely in the studied of Korean modernism literature of the latter half of 1940s and 1950s. We have "New city and the chorus of citizens(1942)", "Special edition of literature in the latter half(1952)", and "Modem temperature (1957)" . The rhetorical features in the poems by the members of "Hubangi" are Pun and Depaysement. Those ways are significant in the respect that they widen the realm of modem poetry. The poems of 1950s which show poetic truth are distinctive from those of 1930s which destroy the formalism.
