After the assassination of President Park Jung Hee in 1979, the democratic forces and the military class fought each other for the political hegemony in Korea. The fight ended with the victory of the military over the democratic forces. Securing the political hegemony of the country again, the military illegally abandoned the constitutional order, and established a totalitarian state. From 1980 to 1987, it was a period of a political dark age in Korea.
In this critical moment for the nation's democracy, the Chosun llbo was against the democratic forces, while putting the new military regime of Chun Doo Whan in a positive light. It criticized the Gwangju Uprising and other democratic movements maliciously. It criticized the direct election of president. It claimed the parliamentary system as the inappropriate system for Korea, accusing its representatives of being weak and corrupted. The Chosun Ilbo served as a publicity paper of the military regime.
The Chosun Ilbo regards itself as a conservative newspaper. But this assertion is not right. Conservatives in advanced democratic societies have a sound belief in a democratic system. lf the Chosun Ilbo were a conservative newspaper, it should have supported the constitutional order and the liberal democracy. Since the Chosun Ilbo has usually been against the democratic system, it is wrong to say the newspaper is a conservative one. Instead, it is more-or-less a fascist newspaper. This essay intends to prove the fascist characteristics of the Chosun Ilbo through its articles in 1980.
