The purpose of this study is to research figures on thoraces attached to ordinary clothes worn by all the government officials of the Chosun period. since the reign of Kings Yungjo and Jungjo, the system of thoraces was very simplified ana changed in expression. The study investigated factors of the change in relation to circumstances of that time. First, costumes of Chosun which clearly represented the consciousness of social position were gradually less divided due to the influence by positive scholars in the late period of Chosun who claimed the elimination of social position order. This also reflected in thoraces, and their system which was complicated earlier were dramatically simplified later. Second, in the late period of Chosun, positivism that asserted overcoming the view of the world centering around China and establishing the superior position of our' nation influenced figures on the thoraces which were in turn changed subjectively avoiding subordination to China.
And third. the cultural dignity and function of the ruling class were lost in the late period of Chosun, when shamanism and Taoism as underlying in popular culture for a long time had effects in various ways. The dominant religious ideas of society also influenced figures on thoraces.
