Drawing a sharp line between preaching and teaching and neglecting the clergy's teaching office does violence to the history of the church. In support of this connection, Ernest Burton, an historian and theologian at the University of Chicago in the late 19th century delivered an alumni lecture in which he is remembered to have commented that on pastors rest the ultimate responsibility of seeing that their people are biblically and theologically literate. Therefore, he concluded that pastors must accept and practice their historic role as the church's chief teacher.
As we enter the twenty-first century and reflect on the needs of the church, I am convinced that "teacher" once again needs to become the dominate image of a pastor and that the teaching of adults the primary role played by ever clergy person. Why? Because the pastor as teacher has always been essential when the church found itself in an alien culture, as in the first four centuries, when there was an acknowledged need for reform as during the sixteenth century the faith and lives of its people as in this century.
To be a teacher means more than to be professional who possesses knowledge and skills. It is to have the courage to enter into a common search with others. To live in a community that sees in us the image of the divine so that we can see it in ourselves and thus be enabled to see the same image in those we teach!
