Busan was the second or third big city of Korea under the Japanese rule from 1910 to 1945. Although the weight of Japanese population in the total estimate was decreasing annually from 51.3% in 1914 to 18.2% in 1942, the absolute population of Japanese society in Busan increased about 2.8 times during the same period. The factors of the population growth mostly depended on the social changes, but not on the natural increase. They are as follows. First, Busan was geographically the nearest city in Korea to Japan. Busan played a role of an advanced base for the domination of Korea by Japan. As a result Busan became one of the important colonial cities for Japanese Imperialism in Korea. Secondly, Busan was developed and industrialized by Japanese in Busan with the continual extension of the port facilities, and as a result the demands for labor power was increasing all the time. And a number of Japanese from their home land had come over to Busan since in 1925, the year that a business recession began in Japan. Thirdly, the transfer of the Kyeong-nam province office to Busan from Jinjoo in 1925 made the Japanese population of Busan city increase, because the most part of Kyeong-nam government officials were Japanese. Fourthly and lastly, in addition to the above factors, the two times extensions of the administration district of Busan city in 1936 and in 1942 influenced the demographics of japanese society in Busan. In general, under the Japanese imperialism, the relative index number of Japanese settlement in Busan was not high ; it was reflected in the low natural increase rate of Japanese population, and in much higher rate of the rented houses than that of the own houses in Japanese society. In the other hand, in Busan the job[social stratification] structure of Japanese society was very different from that of Korean society. The former which was ma de of diamond shape showed that the weight of the population of the upper-middle was high relatively in comparison of the case of the latter. Especially the population weight of merchants and industrialists of the Japanese society in Busan was higher than that in any other cities in Korea. It was very characteristic feature which resulted from the development and industrialization of Busan during the period of Japanese colonial rule. Besides that, the 45% of the total population of Japanese society in Busan was engaged in occupations of various kinds as manual laborers. The relative weight of merchants and industrialists had been decreasing annually, but Busan did lose to the last its fame as the most developed commercial city in Korea owing to the continuous increase of Japanese merchants and industrialists. In short, the division between Korean society and Japanese society continued socially as well as geographically throughout the period of Japanese colonial rule, which reflected the historical fact that Busan was one of the most typical colonial cities in Korea at that time.
