The purpose of this paper is to consider the characteristic of Busan and the history of the name of Busan administrative districts. The result of this study runs as follows.
First, the units of administrative districts in Busan have been changed Geochilsan-gun in the age of the Three States into Dongnae-hyeon in the Goryeo period, and then into Dongnae-dohobu in the Joseon period. It was followed by Busan-bu and Dongnae-gun under the rule of Japanese imperialism. After forming the Korean Government, it was divided into Busan-si and Dongnae-gun, Busan-si was raised to Busan-jikhalsi(jikhalsi means a city under the direct control of the central government), and some parts of Dongnae--gun was incorporated into Busan-jikhalsi-in 1963. Subsequently Dongnae-gun was united to Yangsan-gun in 1973, and Gijang-gun was united to Busan-gwangyeoksi(gwangyeoksi means a metropolitan city). At last, these changes reached the name of Busan administrative districts today.
The units of administrative districts in Busan have been on the basis of the Gun-Hyeon System for long time. And then the unit of Hyeon was changed into the unit of Myeon, and the subunit became the Dong-Ri System in the later 18C. Japanese administrative units, Jeong and Jeongmok, was used under the rule of Japanese imperialism, it was changed into Dong and Ga(Ga means a street) in 1947. The Bu System became the Si(city) System in 1949, as a result of it Busan-bu turned into Busan-si, The Gu System came into effect in 1957. Busan-jikhalsi was turned in 1963 and Busan-gwangyeoksi was turned in1995.
The names of subadministrative districts, particularly Dong and Ri, have been changed frequently, most of their old names have disappeared. Besides now the name of Dong are symbolized as the unit of number like the example Yeonsan 1 dong ~ 9 dong. This was for tightening the control of residents since the rule of Japanese imperialism, and was just for convenience. Therefore instead of the unit of number, we have to represent them as the various place names by using the old place names in Busan administrative districts. This work helps us to feel the ancestor's traces penetrating into the place name and to establish the identity of Busan.
