Ulysses of Dante in the Divine Comedy is an invented figure conveying two main themes of the work: the conflict between the pagan ideal of humanity and Divine Christianity, and Dante's conversion from humane presumption to Christian morality. For Ulysses, Dante invented a fate different from the one set out in the Odyssey. This study is an attempt to answer such questions as why Dante recreated the story of Ulysses and how this new story can be incorporated into the whole poem. By approaching these questions from the two aspects of Dante, so to speak Dante-the-pilgrim and Dante-the-poet, this study elucidates that while, as a symbolic figure dramatizing an excessively aspiring human spirit, Ulysses signifies a counter-figure that Dante-the-pilgrim should overcome, for Dante-the-poet, the same Ulysses becomes his mirror image that steps into a domain appropriate to God. This doubleness within Dante himself serves a significant mechanism intensifying the poetic tension and the poet's internal conflict as well. Ultimately, by illuminating the way that the concern of Dante-the-poet is resolved into that of Dante-the-pilgrim, this study explores that, in spite of its precautious interest in pagan ideal of human dignity, the story of Ulysses, and even the Divine Comedy, convey the medieval ideal of Christian humility at its core.
