Man in modern civilized societies has undergone a great deal of alienation never seen before. Remedy for such alienation is the very issue in relation to the recovery of ecosystem.
There will be several ways to get over alienation. It might be one of the ways to identify and recognize 'the body' represented in Jeong Jin-gyu's poems.
To Jeong Jin-gyu, 'the body' is something innate and neutral, which man is born with. This body, however, is transformed into a tool under the social pressures. In this way, Jeong Jin-gyu actively involves himself in identifying and creating 'the body' as such has not been made into a tool yet.
It can be argued that there are, in general, four steps through which man can truly get over alienation and be a liberated healthy man.
Procured civil rights in society is the first step. Realizing and accepting that man himself is 'the body', the very biological existence, is the second step. The third step involves man's transcending his individuality through self-definition that 'I am matter.' The fourth step involves man's engaging himself in such world as 'Nil(Heo)', 'Nothingness(Mu)' and 'Gong (Emptiness)', which are beyond the phenomenal world, and where his desire is near zero and he can be 'self-sufficient'. The more 'self-sufficiently' he leads a life, the freer he is; the freer, the healthier, in turn.
'The body' represented in Jeong Jin-gyu's poems contributes to the second step where man's alienation is overcome through self-definition. Even though it is the second step, it is indeed not easy to reach here. It is highly important that a man, liberated from every kind of social pressures, has been recognized as 'the body', the biological existence, and that the inherent significance and beauty has been illuminated.
