This article aims to review the critical works of Jang Il-Woo, a Korean resident in Japan who wrote many articles in a Korean Journal called "Hanyang" published in Japan during 1960's. His activities have never attracted people's interest in the history of literature and critiques. Thus any systematic study on his literary works has never been done so far. Nevertheless, his works cast very important significance on the development of Korean literature. He developed a series of detailed discussion over individual writers and works with his own elegant perspective about the participation of the literature in current world issues during 1960's when there had been no serious discussion on that matter.
This review paper classifies his critical works into four different categories: a) general critique and participation of the literature in current world issues, b) critique of incomprehensive poems and conventional theory, c) existential critique and humanistic theory, d) realism theory and new generation theory and others. This categorization will pave the way to the second round discussion over the role of "Hanyang" and Jang Il-Woo's literary world. It will also ignite one-step further discussion over the literary participation in the current world issues which is the greatest subject during 1960's.
Finally, this paper will also investigate the possible influence of Jang's critiques over the poems and critiques of Kim Su-Young who was cleary impressed with his literary perspective.
