To Lee Jung Hwan, the matter of choosing a place for living was not a matter of location or not a matter of financial status. It was a matter of one's own principles in life. Just like the members and colleagues at the Baekryeon Poem society believed, Lee Jung Hwan always believed the hills and streams to be the place where gentlemen disturbed by the troubled world should return in the end. But Lee Jung Hwan was unique in that he ultimately hoped for a world where one would not have to choose where to live and where to live not. In that sense, his thoughts very much resembled those of the Chinese Eastern-Jin figure Doh Yeon Myeong. Living in a politically turbulent period, Doh Yeon Myeong chose not to pursue a political career, left his post and engaged in a personal hermitage, but did not give up his hope for the world. Lee Jung Hwan was heavily influenced by Lee Ik who emphasized the importance of financial issues. But Lee Jung Hwan perceived such financial issues based upon the way of life chosen by Doh Yeon Myeong and the message of hope that Doh had maintained.
Lee Jung Hwan's thoughts and philosophy are very important, especially today and in this world where ideas of development, thirst for progress, ordinary nature of things and the continuous nature of things are constantly colliding with each other. In this article, the question of what kind of meaning does Lee Jung Hwan's thoughts have in this period of time will be addressed. And the process will include examining the issue of 'how the objects of examination should be perceived and understood' as well. If the object had been approached only from internal point of views, certain external point of views would be helpful, and the case will be the same with the other way around as well. Such efforts would contribute to revealing the true essence of the object of examination.
