The purpose of this paper is to explain the impact of the Second Vatican Council(Vatican Ⅱ) on the social participation of the Korean Catholic Church. For the Korean Catholic Church, the Vatican Ⅱ was not just a 'external' factor. Therefore what is important is to trace the processes of 'internalization of a external factor(Vatican Ⅱ)'. This processes of internalization of the Vatican Ⅱ into the Korean Church accompanied considerable amount of conflicts within the Church. Therefore the understanding of the impact of the Vatican Ⅱ on the Korean Church needs to analyse the 'creative and conflictive hermeneutics' made by various subjects within the Church.
In this paper, I tried to deal with the period of the most active social participation. This period begins with the imprisonment of Bishop Tji Hak-Soon in 1974, and ends with the June 1987 struggle for democracy. The data used in this paper were the statements, declarations, messages issued and delivered at the prayer meetings, masses, press conferences, campaigns, march, and public demonstrations held by the Korean Catholics. This materials were collected and edited in 8 volume series titled A Torch in the Darkness published by the Gaudium et Spes Pastoral Institute(GSPI). This books contain 663 materials concerning the social participation of the Korean Catholic Church, and these materials analysed statistically.
The most active organization during the period of 1974~1987 was the Committee for Justice and Peace(CJP). CJP issued 114 materials(17.2%) concerning the social participation in that period. CJP followed by the Catholic Priests' Association for Justice(CPAJ) which issued 107 materials(16.1%), bishops(105 materials, 15.8%), individual priests(85 materials, 12.8%), the Korean Catholic Farmers' Movement(KCFM)(77 materials, 11.6%), priests of the individual dioceses(67 materials, 10.1%).
During the period of 1974~1987, catholics leading the Korean Catholic Church's social participation cited the church documents 322 times in all. Among them, the Vatican Ⅱ documents were cited 114 times(35.4%). The most frequently cited document at the sites of social participation was Gaudium et Spes. It was cited 83 times(25.8%) in the same period. Gaudium et Spes was followed by Mater et Magistra(cited 36 times, 11.2%), Pacem in Terris(24 times, 7.5%), "Massage of the Synod on Human Rights and Reconciliation"(l6 times, 5.0%), Justitia in Mundo(15 times, 4.7%), Rerum Novarum(11 times, 3.4%), Populorum Progressio(11 times, 3.4%), Octogesima Adveniens(10 times, 3.1%), Lumen Gentium(8 times, 2.5%).
