The relation between human being and animal, human being and ghost, varies with the times. In the times when symmetrical view of the world had dominated, human, animal and ghost had an equal status, while going into the times when Buddhism-value had dominated, human being has had a absolutely predominant status. If animal and ghost have admitting the fact for themselves that they are inferior, they would enjoy a stability in the up-and-down relation, but if they try to enjoy unequal status with human, an conflict with human would become inevitable. With the very point of view like this, the author looked over the direction of folk belief in the Yo-goi-toi-chi tale of ‘Shinju Pyeon’. The results of study can be summarized as follows;
First, in the Yo-goi-toi-chi tale, a confrontation between a high priest and an ghost has been discovered. Because both of them try to expand their influence into the world of human, a relation between the two shows an aspect of competing for a same position.
Second, a ghost is not a simple monster. The existing Buddhism has confronted with folk belief before esoteric Buddhism, when remembering that this confrontation was assumed by esoteric Buddhism, a ghost should be understood within the category of folk belief.
Third, It seems that Yo-goi-toi-chi tale presents the direction of folk belief in that it has stressed the defeat of folk belief to Buddhism belief. According to that, it has become possible to have a view that folk belief is put on the defensive and finally became submitted to Buddhism belief in the future.
