Cheong-maek(청맥), which had been published from 1964 to 1967, was a magazine read by radical intellectuals at the time. Although Cheong-maek contained a lot of important literary works and criticism, this magazine has been eliminated from literary studies for long since it was related to the ‘Tong-Hyuk party,' which was prohibited from social activity by the Korean government. The purpose of this paper is to examine the criticism of Cheong-maek and to give it a right status in the history of korean modern literary criticism.
The criticism of Cheong-maek connected anti-foreign nationalism to the theory of literary participation, and this paper searched three directions out of it. First, the critics of Cheong-maek introspected the defect of theory of literary participation, which was a mere slogan rather than a creative writing, and required new creative works based on the critical mind and historical consciousness from the writers of the day. Second, the critics of Cheong-maek illuminated alienated poetics from the perspective of sociology of literature and developed the theory of immanent growth of korean literature. Third, the critics of Cheong-maek built up the theory of realism and suggested the possibility of labor's literature while discussing the popularity and ideality problem. Likewise, the criticism of Cheong-maek implicated cognition on national literature and realism theory, and the spirit of Cheong-maek was succeeded by the national literature theory of Changjak-gwa-bipyung(창작과비평) and Sanghwang(상황) in 1970's.
