This paper aims to read Freud's Dora in a feminist way. It approaches the text as a male construct built up with male prejudices against women and femininity and tries to interpret Dora's decision not to marry Herr K as an active embodiment of her feminine characteristics and a strong self-assertion. Though Freud declares that his psychoanalytic theories are efficient method to cure the hysteria of Dora, his report of the case story reveals the opposite: he fails to do so because she refuses his treatment at a critical moment.
This paper argues that Dora's physical and mental symptoms of hysteria are signs of resistance to her patriarchal surroundings and that her decision not to accept Freud's suggestion to marry Herr K is quite right and quite a feminist response. Freud's idea that Dora should marry Herr K comes from his patriarchal assumptions on gender and sexuality. He believes that only penis is an important sexual organ and only heterosexuality is a normal sexuality because for him clitoris and homosexuality are just copies of the origins. So while he can interpret Dora's sexuality in relationship with her father and Herr K, he is blind to her simultaneous homosexual feelings toward her mother and Frau K. While Dora loves her father and Herr K., she also loves her mother and Frau K. It is to her mom that she tells the lake episode for the first time. It is also remarkable that her comments on Frau K are usually mild while her criticisms of Herr K are always severe. Dora knows that in case she marries Herr K her mother and Frau K would be victims of her decision. Her way of thinking and behaviour is not immature or problematic as Freud suggests. It is rather an expression of her feminine characteristics and her strong self-assertion.
