This article analyses The Mill on the Floss(1860) from the view of ‘symbolic violence' of Pierre Bourdieu, a French socialist. It is the invisible power ruled by ‘meconnaissance’ and a voluntary conspiracy institutionalized by education. I regard the stereotype of the nineteenth-century female image as ‘symbolic violence' and examine how symbolic violence has an effect on Maggie in 1) Maggie's house, 2) the different education of both Tom and Maggie, and 3) the general society of St. Ogg's.
In the response of men and women who regard Lucy as a desirable girl and Maggie as an undesirable one, we can see the voluntary conspiracy, and ‘meconnaissance' to symbolic violence in Maggie's house. In the different education of Tom and Maggie, symbolic violence is shown as institutionalized by education, which reproduces symbolic violence. In the different response to Stephen and Maggie of general society, the ‘meconnaissance’ of and conspiracy to symbolic violence, is revealed. George Eliot may suggest a fantasy of a new society or a radical social change in the ending, as Maggie drowns and society is destroyed with her in a flood.
This article suggests the reading that Maggie shows not her surrender, but her consistent resistance to symbolic violence on a deep level, though it may also be seen simply as a story of the frustration of Maggie in St. Ogg's.
