In this article, I analyze the biblical allusion of “the return of a prodigal son” in The Mill on the Floss (1860) by George Eliot. Maggie ran away and returned to her home twice; her first runaway to gypsies and her return home in her childhood, and her second runaway with Stephen in a boat and her return to St. Ogg’s when she was an adult. In these two episodes, the pattern of her running and returning home is similar with the story of a prodigal son described in the Bible, except that she gets treated very differently in her second episode because her father had passed away.
However, both the first and second sons are prodigal sons in a sense that they are “a prodigal son at home” and “a returned prodigal son”. This logic extends to Tom and Maggie. Eliot suggests that Maggie is “a returned prodigal son,” and Tom is “a prodigal son at home,” though Tom does not appear to be prodigal in the beginning. So Tom is a real sinner because he lacks generosity and human sympathy to others, and his judgment of others is more like that of a Pharisee and a hypocrite. Perhaps Tom is a worse “prodigal son at home” than Maggie as mentioned above. This is what Eliot alludes through “a prodigal son” parable. In the ending, where Maggie saves Tom and dies in a sudden flood, Eliot's thought that regards Maggie as a modern St. Ogg with her sympathy to her brother, is clearly apparent.
I surveyed the biblical meaning of a prodigal son, and the relationship between the biblical parable and the “religion of humanity.” Consequently it is extremely difficult to decide who the real prodigal son is, and to make a judgment on the other’s sin socially and ethically. Eliot twisted the biblical allusion to emphasize the necessity of human sympathy for dilemma of others.
