It is the aim of this essay to examine the structural features of the full-length novel <Hwa-San-Gi-Bong(화산기봉)> and to inquire into the meaning of it.
<Hwa-San-Gi-Bong(화산기봉)> has a repetitional structure in which two motives reiterate. The first motif is a scramble story on status of first-wife and the second motif is a war story.
There are four first-wife scrambles. Three of them originate centering around the second wives of Lee's family. They are Jang氏, young mistress Seul and Kyoju who is the daughter of imperial comcubine. The other scramble is occurred by the imperial concubine Euh氏. Each conflict of the scramble stories is solved and then the end of the novel is concluded. In the mean time, the war stories are repeated ten times. The repetition of various war stories has a function as the revelation of heroic ability of Lee Seong.
The structural repetition of narrative has a meaning in that it is the universal characteristic in the other full-length novels at that times. But the two motives are cross-developed in <Hwa-San-Gi-Bong(화산기봉)>. It is the unique feature of <Hwa-San-Gi-Bong(화산기봉)>. The repetitions of the two motives arouse the crisis of the Lee's family. But the hero, Lee Seong, achieves the prosperity and development of his family by conquest of the family crisis.
In short, <Hwa-San-Gi-Bong(화산기봉)> is the novel that arouses the matter about the crisis and the conquest of a family by repetitional structure.
