The purpose of this paper is to examine the principals and issues of contemporary North Korean literature at that point in 2005. Contemporary literature in the Korean Peninsula is ‘Korean literature’, in other words ‘Korean Peninsular literature’ and ‘Our literature’ which includes ‘Chosun literature’(North Korean literature) centering on Pyungyang. Therefore, it shouldn’t be limited to ‘Korean literature(South Korean literature)’ centering on Seoul. In this context the North Korean literature plays local and provincial literature as a part of Korean Peninsular literature while modern and contemporary literature in itself. The antagonism between ‘Seoulism’ and ‘Pyungyangism’, which brought about the division of the Korean peninsula, should be sublated in the view of the Korean peninsula. For 15 years, the present writer has been proposing the principals of the unification literature(consolidated literature), presenting ‘the idea of national literature, aesthetics of realism and the historial approach’ as its concrete matters and conducted the related researches. At this point, the ideal of the unification literature is no longer to remain in researcher’s ideal type or false hope blinking the divided reality. For the unification literature could have been a historial subject through a success of the Korean National Writers Conference, which took place in Pyungyang and Baekdusan in July 2005 organized by South and North Korean writers. The conference participants agreed to form an ‘association of national writers 6.15’, to publish a journal and to present a ‘unification literary award’. The future of the unification literature, however, is not always bright. ‘Juche literature’, which symbolizes the allegiance to Kim Il-sung and Kim Jeong-il, and ‘Military-first revolutionary literature’, a genre encouraged by literary policy which prefers the army to the art and literature, are still psychological and cultural obstacles. Without overcoming them, the unification literature cannot be accomplished.
