Depressive position is one of the most important and analytic concepts of Klein's metapsychology. An infant recognize the whole object and psychic reality in depressive position which is experienced at about three to six months of age. Depressive position represents an important developmental advance, in which whole objects begin to be recognized and ambivalent impulses become directed towards the primary object. The infant comes to recognize that breast which frustrates him is the same as the one which gratifies him, and the result of such integration over time is that ambivalence, that is both hatred and love for the same object, is felt. At the through of Depressive position, various emotions and phenomena, depressive anxiety, guilty feeling, gratitude, remorse, ambivalence and so on. These achievements are essential tasks in normal development. Oedipus complex is concurrent with depressive position and demands infant give up a primary object and go ahead to symbolic territory.
Although the paranoid-schizoid position antedates the depressive position and is more primitive in the pont of view of development, Klein preferred the term 'position' to Freud's idea of stages of development because it emphasized the dynamic relationship between the two positions. there is a continuous movement between the two positions. These fluctuations are the key point in Klein's structural system. As centrality of infancy, the successive working-over of this two positions enables men to obtain the neurotic position from psychotic. The differentiation of neurosis from psychosis is achieved through reality testing and symbolism. A true symbolism is an important and critical focal point in neurosis, and symbolism must be attained in normal development, and this task is achieved through depressive position. At the through of depressive position, man becomes a true subject who recognizes reality, accepts mother's loss, desire, and father's prohibition.
