“Portrait of the Poet as Landscape” presents A. M. Klein’s fullest poetic rendering of the story the archetypal modernist. The elegiac treatment of the artist, hopelessly alienated from his society, invokes comparisons with The Wasteland, “Hugh Selwyn Mauberly,” and Rilke’s Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus. My aim here is to understand the influences on Klein’s modernist style of the writings of Hopkins, Pound, Eliot, and Auden. The style of Montreal poet Klein is characterized by an elaborate rhetoric and ornamentation, and a pronounced idiosyncrasy. Klein’s taste for rhetoric finds various outlets in his modernism. He was influenced most directly not so much by modernists poets of the Tens and Twenties, but by those of the Thirties and Forties whose use of rhetoric tended to be emphatic and almost self-conscious. Those formative influences was used to enrich and heighten Klein’s intrinsic resources in his poetry.
