Jung Ji-yong is one of the main poets in Korea who was active in 1920's and 1930's. He wrote various styles of poetry such as folk poetry, modernism poems, religious poems in catholicism, and nature poem. Looking at his career as a literary figure, one can see that these various styles of poetry were written in successive order. Jung first wrote folk poetry in his early years, then modernism poems, and finally, nature poems in his later years. He wrote religious poems temporarily in a transition period from when he was writing modernism poems to when he started wriring nature poems.
In a sense, Jung's early works of ballads were manifestation of his poetic instinct nourished in the early childhood experience of living in a rural district. For he was not particularly influenced by literature education, such poetic style resulted from his poetic instiner expressing his environment or childhood expenence.
There are two reasons why Jung was able to move from folk poetry to modernism poetry with ease. First, he had an innate talent with language expression and second, he was influenced by his stay in Japan.
When Jung felt the limitation of modernism poetry, he moved on to nature poetry. By overcoming poetry which describes objects or situations in objective and visual perspective, he strove to create poetry that reflects ideology and philosophy. And religious poems in catholicism acted as a mediator in this transition period because religious poems in catholicism had characteristics of both modernism poetry and ideology poetry.
If folk poetry were the expression of his unaffected poetic instinct and religious poems in catholicism were the mediator of modernism poetry and nature poetry, then what becomes important is the transition period. It also indicates his shift from aesthetics to idealism, from sensationalism to ideology, from feeling at real life to metaphysics. In short, this transition period signifies poetry of aesthetics and philosophy transcending to that of ideology.
Jung's nature poetry was written as he searched for the depth of universe's spirit. In short, it was a poetry of proud idealism, investigating orders of nature or predisposition of nature(理氣) through the life of nature(賞自然).
