This article deal with the activities of religion which have contributed initiatively and decisively to the promotion of South-North Corea’s reconciliatory cooperations, political, cultural and economic. The religious activities have a longer and more complicated historical problems than any other reconciliatory exchange programs between South and North. This article deals especially with the North Corean Christian conflicts, caused by Christian opposition, in favor of democracy in line with Western Christianity, to North Corea’s socialist construction in the early period after Corea’s liberation from Japan, the opposition resulting in the tragic persecution of Christians by North Corea’s political authorities, and in their escaping to South Corea in favor of capitalist world, and deals with their anticommunist role for hardening Corea’s divided situation, up to now in general.
However, it is christianity that first opened up a way of dialogues between South-North Corea and opened up the age of reconciliation and cooperation between South and North. Thus, beginning with Christianity, South Corea’s other religions began to develop exchange programs with North. such reconciliatory religious situations hastened also the resolving of the cold war between West and East, although the global future direction of the world beyond the cold war remains problematic. At any rate, in 1972 Communist china and the U. S. A. began to open the relationship of a d tante mood. And since the dissolutions of Eastern Europe and Soviet Union in the 1990’s the world has been opted by Neo-liberal, Global Capitalism. North Corea, while maintaining its own socialist system, has held its strong reunification vision in its own way. Both South and North have held Corea’s reunification in a reconciliatory third term. At last, in the year 2000 the 6.15 South-North Joint Declaration was produced by both parts. It is, indeed, the historic result of our long struggles and sufferings on both parts. The U. S. A’s Corea policy and South Corean Christianity should not stand in the way of our reunification. In view to the realization of the 6.15 South-North Joint Declaration, this article has tackled historically the role and efforts of Corean religions, especially concentrating on Corean Christianity.
This article has considered specifically how Corean Christians who were and still are living in Europe and the U. S. A. made efforts to mediate South-North Corea, undergoing severe oppositions by their fellow Christians in South Corea and abroad. This article has also considered specifically some South Corean Christian leading persons they have struggled and suffered for the cause of Corea’s reunification, and also considered specifically how other religious activities toward reunification movements, and North Corea’s reunification policy are the historical factors that have contributed to the 6.15 South-North Joint Declaration and various reconciliatory cooperations between South-North Corea. The realization of the Declaration must be hastened. In order to realize it, Corean Christianity and other religions must free themselves from the their remaining anti North-Corea. Corea religions have indeed spiritual dimensions to contribute to the reconciliation and reunification between South-North Corea, to creative a third new unified Corea.
