In recent years, the diverse policies for historic environments have been enforced in Korea. In the case of cities, series of the policies have been withdrawn or reduced. because residents have strongly opposed the policies. In the case of rural areas, those have been achieved success to some degree. Now, situation of traditional villages in rural areas. however, become increasingly deteriorated like those of the city.
The purpose of this study is to understand their current situation and effects of applied laws for historic environments in rural areas.
To pursue this purpose, two villages, in Kyoungju, have been selected as a case study. One is Yangdong village, which has been protected by laws. The other is Indong village, maintained a common rurality and located next to Yangdong village. The objects of this study are to analyze differences of several aspects before and after the designation of the law in Yangdong village and to find out differences between two villages.
This study explicates four contents to compare the concise analysis of the villages : 'space,' 'living conditions,' 'production,' and 'consciousness of residents.'
The results reveal that directly, 'outdoor space' and 'production system' have been affected the designation of the law in Yangdong village. The most contrasting points, between two villages, are some aspects in 'space,' 'production,' and 'consciousness of residents.'
These call for the necessity of a new approach that is substituted for existing methodology to protect merely cultural assets. In other words, the most important thing, in conservation for historic environments, is a hamony between a flexible regulation of physical dimensions and a thoughtful consideration of non - physical dimensions.
