The purpose of this paper is to review characteristics of songs related to the practices of Sisonbae harbored at Ganghwa-do. Belows are considered to this end ;songs from MBC HanKuk MinyoDaejeon(Great Series of Korean Folk Songs) and from falk songs compiled by Yim Suk-jay and songs collected from field research by the author.
The geographical names of places along the Han river appear in the text of lyrics of the songs and so it leads us to infer that the Sisonbae must have sail along the flow of Han river mainly at night. Compared to rowing songs of other ship, rowing songs of Sisonbae has longer lyrics in its response and the length of entire song is longer as well. It is feasible to induce that it was a laborious long journey of rowing from Ganghwa-do directly to Mapo. And so to mitigate the intensity of labor and to relieve boredom from tedious rowing, this style of rowing song was derived.
All songs of mast rolling song, mast raisin song, rowing song, etc are sung by lead and response. Unlike other falk songs with the same style, rowing song of Sisonbae is noticeable in that it has more diversified melodic pattern and lyrics in both leading and responsorial part. Moreover, response appears in the middle of leading song.
Except for Baechigi-sori in Nanbongga-tori, all other songs of Sisonbae are in BanGyeong-tori with scale of La-Do-Re-Mi-So with La as cadence. Whereas having tonal texture of BanGyeong-tori, Mi and Sol, lower note than cadence appears meaning it has lower notes than cadence with BanGyeong-tori. Fourth or fifth tone or cadence is slightly ornamented especially for notes with long interval. The fact note above the cadence is ornamented means that it has musical feature of 서도 music. This can be explained if the geographical location of Ganghwa-do is considered neighboring with Hwanghae-do Yeonbaek, Gyeonggi-do Kaepunggun in north, Gyeonggi-do Kimpo-si in east and Ongjingun, Seogu in south. It sufficiently shows active exchange of culture among regions.
