Arari is a representative folksong in Gangwon Province.
This Arari is originated from Jeongson, but it is now being sung in every district in Ganwon Province. It is not that difficult to hear a few pieces of folksongs from the elderly living in small villages, even though transmission of songs is not active as it used to be. Arari refers to three kinds of Araris: Geen Arari(slow tempo), Jajin Arari(quick tempo) and Yeokkeum Arari(variation).
This study aims to examine the circle of Arari in Gangwon Province through the cultural background and to analyze the aspects of transmission of Arari.
First, Arari is divided into three; Geen Arari, Jajin Arari and Yeokkeum Arari.
There are total 3516 pieces of songs in Great series of Korea Folksongs and Gangwon Folksongs ⅠㆍⅡ. Among them, Geen Arari occupied the largest portion and then Jajin Ararin and Yeokkeum Arari in order. The reason why people take Arari to be a representative folksong in Gangwon Province is that Arari is sung by anyone in everywhere, no matter where they work and that it is not difficult to express their feelings. I mentioned that this is a value of Arari in Gangwon area.
Secondly, I investigated the regional distribution and function of Geen Arari, Jajin Arari and Yeokkeum Arari and examined the relation between them. Yeokkeum Arari is hardly found in Nothern Youngseo and Youngdong where Jajin Arari has been strong. Studying from refrain of Yeokkeum Arari, I found out that Jap-ga is showed up in area adjacent to Seoul and Gyounggi Province. Jajin Arari like song of transplanting rice seedlings is sung most in Youngdong area.
Thirdly, the geographical feature of Gangwon Province is mountainous. There has been a cultural and civilizational difference between Youngseo and Youngdong because Baekdudaegan runs north and south. Gangwon province is also the source of southern and northern Han rive. It is expected that Arai has spread along the river and the mountain. The mountain range and waterway are also division lines of culture, Considering this, I divided Arari in Ganwon area into Baekdudaegan, the metropolitan area and East-sea area. Baekdudaegan is a native place of Arari, and is an area run along the Baekdudaegan. The metropolitan area is a region adjacent to Seoul and Gyounggi and East-sea area is an eastern area of Baekdudaqegan.
