This case study is designed to investigate the sociocultural effects of tourism development on a fishing village. Fishing villages on the East Goast has recently been experiencing population decrease, drying up of fishery resources, and reduction of fishing areas. Accordingly, many has been discussing revitalization of fishing villages through tourism or tourist industry.
Tourist development causes changes in the traditional fishing villages. Some fishing villages located especially near a huge entertainment park are affected enormously. Tourist development involves changes in social relationship based on a community life, traditional rituals and reduction of living space.
Because of loss in the steady workforce for fishery and lack of the traditional cooperation, tourist development would bring fishing villages more harm than benefit.
