This study is comparative research on story types originating from the Buddhist scriptures of India, China and Korea. The purpose of this study is: first, to analytically and positively reconsider the theory that "Journey Story to God to Receive Reward" is based on Buddhist scriptures second, to investigate the intertextuality between the stories of the three countries and third, to clearly reveal both the common and different points of the three stories.
Originally, the early types of "Journey Stories to God to Receive Reward" were mixed with both realistic and fictional stories of India. In this stage, the stories were unbalanced and their motifs were unorganized. These stories did not feature materiality as an independent type of folktale. This means the oral traditional history of these kinds of stories did not date back far enough to form a specific type of story. Oral stories from outside India playeda crucial role in overcoming the immature stage of India’s oral stories.
These Indian stories made it to China, where the immature and unstable factors of the Indian stories were omitted, mediated and complemented and they became an independent form of traditional folktale. In this process, Buddhist teaching was applied and specifically, the fact that one of the three Chinese puzzles is connected with the main character’s marriage implies that the Buddhist factors in these folktales, and common people’s desires, were harmonized. The balance between the Buddhist theme and the common people’s desires is the most important variation in the process that Indian folktales succeeded in establishing in China.
It seems that Korean oral stories came from Chinese stories, judging from the similarity of types and motifs. The basic type of Korean oral story is closer to that of China than to that of India. The difference between the Korean and Chinese stories is that a concept called "Bok," which means prosperity, happiness and health is emphasized more in the Korean stories. In the Korean stories, the desire that will achieve “Bok” is expressed more strongly than in Chinese stories, so ethical acts expressed in the Chinese stories, which are the necessary conditions to acquire “Bok”, were eliminated. The emphasis on “Bok” in Korean oral stories shows Korean people’s thought process very well.
