The aim of this paper is to investigate and provide the status of the church archives of Daejon and Choongnam province concerning its preservation. This task is part of a research to systematically analyze the influence of Christianity, a western religion, to the residential groups of Daejon and Choongnam province over the past century. All accessible documentations of regional churches will be collected and classified into the following categories; missionary documentations, conference records from regional churches, and early church documentations. Another purpose of this paper is to investigate the records management of the regional churches in Daejon and Choongnam. In other words, as a preparation stage of a means to arrange and classify the modern and present documentations of Christianity in Daejon and Choongnam region, I will illustrate the management status of this regions Christianity documentations in terms of public documentation regulations andproduction and types of documentations. In this process, 2 cases of each regional church council and opening church will be specifically introduced. Rather than presenting an alternative plan for managing the church archives, this study intends to examine and inspect the records management status of the regional churches focusing on the underlying mechanism of church administration found through the production of church documentations, while bearing in mind the distinctiveness of church archives described as "a provable expedient to remember the church activities and a memory of church community."
Under the circumstances of rarely having Choongchung missionary archives in Korean, the records of the American missionaries are an invaluable resource that can show the situation of early Christianity in this region. Those include missionary journals that are filled with papers from the Northern Christianity and Oriental Missionary Council, missionary conference records of American Methodists and Southern Presbyterians, and the voices of missionaries stationed in Korea. The records of regional churches conference notes include those from Kunsan assembly, Presbyterian regional conference, regional evangelical holiness church, and recordings of the Baptists church. There are currently 14 cases of early church documentations known, including the history of Kyuam church, and a short history of the 60th anniversary of Yeonbong Church. The amount is not huge, however, these are essential for recovering the memories of churches in this region, and now it is about time to preserve as well as make more use of them. Most of the records are dispersed and difficult to access.
Historically, the church is a community of preservation and records. The church, of which Jesus Christ stands as head, and the reliance toward its sacredness enabled the members to share a faith that the records of the church is also important. Evidence was found in the constitutional law of the Korean Presbyterian Assembly which was written through the influence of the American lead Christianity in Korea. However, concerns are emerging that the importance and usefulness of church archives are not reflected in the provisions of the church constitutional law. This is because the form of passive preparation of public documents and mishandling is shown, rather than reflecting the minds of justice that are specified and refined by lower units of churches based on the fundamental and declaratory regulations of the church constitutional law. The assembly and individual churches of Daejon and Choongnam province actively produced various documentations, but seem to lack of providing advanced information in terms of records management.
