G. Iggers suggested four basic ideas for doing historiography from global perspective: a process of rationalization; the concept of history as a unilinear directional process; history as a scientific discipline; and the national History. At a glance, these four ideas seem to be the concepts within the Eurocentric frame.However, when Iggers suggested these ideas, he was trying to grope for a global perspective with which to have a new understanding of multiple modernities beyond the Eurocentrism, which identifies modernization with Westernization. However, are these ideas able to present a global perspective applicable to modern historiography of both the East and the West?
Among these four ideas, the first (a process of rationalization) and the last (the national History) are the most important. First of all, a process of rationalization, characterized by the "demystification of the world" according to M. Weber, has formed the prerequisite for the scientification of historiography that breaks from the understanding of history based on moral code. This scientification of historiography has been pursued in East Asian countries since the late 19th century, to serve the immediate task of constructing national states. Therefore, this paper explores the ways to do modern historiography from global perspective by reflecting upon the process of the East Asian modification of modern historiography based on the two ideas mentioned above.
