This study intended to explore the effects of Korean-type early action programs introduced in 1998 as a core part of the Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources(MOE)'s a new university entrance examination policy. A sample was taken from a comprehensive university in the metropolitan area, amounting to 3,620 freshmen's grade point average(GPA) in their first semester. The categories used for the Analysis of Variance tests were the entering period(early decision 1, 2, and regular), the methods of selection(recommendation, excellency in particular subjects, and regular), and the sexes(boys and girls). The students for the regular period and the regular method of selection were supposed to hand in the government-sponsored scholastic aptitude test(GSAT) scores for their admission to the university. Unfortunately, the Pearson correlation between GPA and GSAT were extremely low(γ=0.060) so that GSAT scores appeared to have no meaningful effects on college GPA. Those students admitted at the regular period with regular method of selection were significantly lowest in their first GPA compared to other groups. However, the sex appeared to show greater impacts on high GPA than the entering period or the methods of selection. Despite this fact, it is not so hard to conclude that the MOE's new policy on university entrance examination appeared to have some desired effects.
