With the publication of “The Grass” in the 1960s, the poet Kim Su-yeong laid a stepping stone for the flood of a “hostess literature” in the following decade. The poetic object called “the grass” represents the young women who are driven to the urban cities to make money for the tuitions of their younger or elder brothers. Obviously, they are victims of families residing in the rural and fishing villages which are deserted from urban industrialization, In the poem “The Grass”, the poet encapsulates the quick resilience of grass bent by the wind, a symbolic act of commercial sex. As the last line of the poem reveals in the crisp words, “the grass roots lie down”, the poet significantly epitomizes the wayward values of young women’s lives.
In this poem, the poet portrays a process of impoverishment among the poor country families by the use of a symbolic image of grass which represents the young women who are forced to engage themselves in prostitution.
Thematically, the poem is concerned with the principle of causality reflected through the waving grass - young women which are forced to take the wayward road at youth. Throughout the poem, the poet captures from the existential viewpoint an aspect of changing life, the grass, under the logic of economy.
The poet suggests that young men living in the tumorous stage of life should establish the sound values of their life in the poem which aesthetically encapsulates the images of grass and wind.
“The Grass” acutely represents not only a sex spectrum prevailing in bourgeois society, but also is an avant-garde poem through which the poet delivers his message to a “literature of distancing sex”.
