Cultural organizations and various local governments of Korea are becoming more active in the representations of royal court ceremonies. In those representation efforts, one very important element is the traditional costume. In the process of reproducing the old costumes, however, there are a range of problems, such as the lack of historical information, high expenses, comfortableness of the participating models, and safe preservation of the costumes afterwards. Due to these problems, some compromises are inevitable.
Then there is a short historical review of the reshaping of the traditional costumes as cultural contents. The Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Properties(FPCP) has continued efforts for the representation of royal court ceremonies, where we were fortunate to participate. About these events, overall process of historical researches are shown to demonstrate the main features of the reproduced costumes and their characteristics. And we try to search for the problems and answers about the representation efforts, in the four dimensions of sponsoring organization, researchers for historical investigations, manufacturers for the reproduction, and demonstrators as actual costume-wearers.
With the growing number of representation of traditional ceremonies, under the higher interests of participants, it is expected that more active and realistic supplementations are possible. Present study is expected to be helpful in the cultivation and utilization of the Korean traditional cultures.
