The purpose of this paper is to estimate the preservation value of the Korean DMZ eco-tourism resources, using a dichotomous choice contingent valuation method. For this end this study conducted surveys for Japanese tourists as well as domestic people in order to elicit willingness to pay, using a self-administered questionnaire.
The results of logit model indicated that bid, age, impact, and sex(for foreign tourists) were the most important variables in explaining willingness to pay for the DMZ ecotourism resources. The empirical results also showed that the preservation values of DMZ eco-tourism resources were estimated to be 21,100 won per person for domestic people and 31,400 won for Japanese tourist based on a truncated willingness-to-pay method. Considering national population data with per capita value, total economic impact of the DMZ eco-tourism was estimated to be 760 billion won. Implications for the results of measuring the DMZ eco-tourism were discussed in the conclusion section.
