The studies of families and relatives, which had continued since the Japanese occupation period and up until the 1980s, can be examined in three separate periods. During the first and second periods, studies tended to take for granted the existence of paternal-based group of relatives in the past, based upon the theory of social evolution. And then, coming into the 3rd period, the so-called ‘positive’ studies commenced.
The achievements and failures that have been made so far, can be evaluated in terms of the so-called Positivism and theories. Members of the modern historical society in Japan claimed that they inherited the ‘positive historical studies’ originated by Ranke of Germany, and Koreans also pursued to maintain such attitude toward history even after 1945. Yet the historians were overwhelmed by Western theoretical influences, and believed that the theory of evolution was indeed representing the truth regarding social phenomena, so ironically they were not able to really reach the level of actual positivism. As a result, positive studies that had been conducted during the Japanese occupation period were summarily ignored, while those studies actually had some merits and values that should not be overlooked so quickly. It reminds us of the importance of not blindly following a foreign theory, and always being prepared to verify something before embracing it.
Also, there is the issue of ‘practice’. It is not always most ideal to have a particular line of studies linked to a particular comtemporary issue of the society. But specific studies tend to attract attention and be acknowledged by the public, and also inspire future scholars and researchers, due to the existence of a certain social environment or atmosphere. So, studies must be conducted on ‘positive’ terms, with consideration of the social issues as well. And scholars should venture upon actually doing something, by either widening their perspectives, or suggesting options and alternatives and resolutions.
