The purpose of this paper is to examine the cognitive process of metaphoric meaning in Korean with conceptual blending operation, which has been advocated by Gilles Fauconnier since 1994. For this purpose, the following three points are treated: First, I introduce the fundamental notions of the blending theory. The blend inherits partial structure from the input spaces and has emergent structure of its own. Second, I examine the aspects of input space building. Though input space building for blending is typically composed of two spaces, its composed of three input spaces in some cases, an example of 'X is the Y of Z'. Third, I discuss how the conceptual integration operates to the interaction of blending with metaphor and metonymy. Metonymic operation in blending is show how aspects of input space building serves to perpetuate and modify culturally concepts. Metaphor is a salient and pervasive cognitive process that Iinks conceptuaIization and language. It depends crucially on a cross-space mapping between two inputs. This makes it a prime candidate for the construction of blends, and indeed we find that blended spaces play a key role in metaphorical mapping. That is, in addition to the familiar Source and Target of metaphorical projection, blends are constructed in which important cognitive work gets accomplished.
