This paper reexamines the issue of whether the cross-event relation 'and' sentences are true coordinate sentences with a focus on Culicover and Jackendoff (1997) and Tamly (2000). In the former, conditional cross-event relation 'and' sentences were analyzed as a non-coordinate at a conceptual level but as a coordinate at a syntactic level; in the latter, they are proposed not to be true coordinate sentences in both levels. I will show that Culicover and Jackendoff's arguments for the coordinate status of their 'and' sentences are not valid. This will lead us to the conclusion that the cross-event relation sentences are not true coordinate sentences as has been proposed by the works in cognitive semantics such as Lakoff (1986) and Talmy (2000). Finally, it will be discussed that explicature which contains the cross-event relation meaning should be the basis for the analysis of the syntax and semantics interface since it plays a role in syntactic operations like extraction.
