Low bone mineral densitry(BMD) is an important risk factor for the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and also one among the main cause of non-trauma fracture. It has been reported that this phenotype has a strong genetic component as well as is controlled by environmental factors such as nutrition and exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the T869C polymorphism of the TGF-β1 gene and body composition or lumbar and femoral BMD values in young men with ages of about 20 years. Our study subjects were composed of a total of 64 young men including 32 controls and 32 athletes. The results from my research were described in lower phrases.
1. Significant differences in several body composition values such as height, weight and diastolic blood pressure values were observed between normal controls and athletes, respectively (P < .05).
2. The T869C polymorphism in the TGF-β1 gene was significantly associated with the BMD value in the right femoral intertrochanter region in our subjects (P < 05).
3. When our subjects were stratified by athletic status, this significance was only unchanged in normal controls, suggesting the significant interaction effect between genetic and environmental factors.
