One of the central themes in Chekhov's literature is the spiritual awakening of a man. In particular. after expedition to Sakhalin, the spiritual awakening of the characters in Chekhov's short stories became a pivotal key in his literary work.
The awakening of the characters in Chekhov's work is divided into two types.
First. the hero look back one's bygones and regret his past mistakes through his subconscious memory. Jakov in 〈The Violin of Rothschild〉 suffer a pailful sense that he had lived in the wrong way of life when his wife died of a disease.
Second, the hero is abruptly conscious of unifying himself with nature and universe in the course of awaring the eternity of time. At this time the hero reached the state of great delight and feeling of escape from worldly existence. A seminary student Ivan Velikopolskij in 〈The Student〉 and an archbishop Peter in 〈The Bishop〉 were deeply moved by instantaneous spiritual awakening that the past is linked with the present by an unbroken chain of events flowing one out of another. Especially Ivan Velikopolskij perceived that he had just seen both ends of that chain. Here Ivan Velikopolskij's abrupt awakening is similar to the Zen of Buddhism.
Chekhov try to get an answer to the mystery of human existence in the philosophical category of time and nature. According to Chekhov's thinking, one can obtain the existential meaning when he realize that he is going with the flow of nature and time as a part of the universe.
