It is regarded that Anton Chekhov's travel of the Island of Sakhalin in 1890 became a great turning point for him to be able to take a subjective view of the existence of human being. The journey, for him, was fruitful from the viewpoint of not only expanding his field of vision to recognize the world but also amplifying critical opinions on the realities of life. Searching a new exit from the position which he had faced and silently reproducing an actual state of human life, the journey provided him for an occasion to extend the fame as an author to search the freedom. After the 90's, Chekhov's way of description shows a great difference from that of the previous style. Therefore, in his works after 90's, he had brought forward in a concrete way what is the true actuality and the course of consciousness which people should adopt.
It takes a definite form in ‘temporality’ that the effort which Chekhov tried to overcome all difficulties that may lie ahead through the internal freedom. In his works, time is a background and main structure of his products. It is generally regarded that his work shows the time which is boring and changeable, not finding the exit in daily life. In this case, the temporality is not meaningful because it has not progressed while the work is read. But, in his works Chekhovian ‘Freedom’ and ‘Consciousness’ are embossed, when somebody is curious about the human being's existence.
It may well be understood the characteristics of Chekhov's works by the time theory of Bergson who was aware of the creative power in ‘durational time’. He regards what can give people freedom of spirit as ‘memories’ and ‘intuition’. In Chekhov's world of literature the concept of ‘durational time’ by Bergson is connected with the correct understanding of ‘memories’, in which the past is not entombed, but is the new root of human life. At the same time it is to have intuition that ‘I’ and ‘the other’ as well as ‘I’ and ‘the world’ will be able to unify in the past, present, and future. What Chekhov had pursued for his readers in his works after 90's until death is to be free from hypocrisy and fabrication for genuine truth, beauty, and freedom. And it is made through a microscopic analysis of ‘durational time’ and ‘timelessness’ which would be a time of existent freedom.
