In 22 January 1963, the franco-german couple signed the Elysee Treaty. In the Common Declaration, preceding the treaty, de gaulle and Adenauer insist on the fact that it represent an act of historical importance in the 'reconciliation' between two countries, 'putting an end to centuries of rivalry'. The treaty contained a number of agreements for joint cooperation in foreign policy. economic and military integration and exchange of student education. Inspired by the Gaullist vision of European priorities, this franco-german friendship was politically contentious.
The Elysee Treaty still remains an important symbolic assertion of franco-german reconciliation and alliance. On must ask. however. what is the historical importance of the Treaty in the franco-german relations and in the construction of Europe? Far from being a magic box for launch the franco-german relations on their way, the Elysee Treaty did not make the franco-german reconciliation once and for all. the latter dating from 1950s. Moreover, it could not play a role of locomotive in favor of the European Construction. Based on the bilateralism directed by the franco-german partnership, the Treaty stood in the way of the multilateral cooperation of the other european partners. The real paradox reside therefore in the fact that the Treaty, moribund and amputated by its difficult departure, revived well from its early barren times and displayed its vitality.
