Conceptual metaphors map one concept domain to the other one. One is physical or concrete while the other is abstract. The mapping is established with the aim of understanding the abstract concepts in terms of the concrete ones.
This study attempts to explore the conceptual metaphor of TIME in Early Modem English and Modem English and find out the differences between them. The purpose has been accomplished by examining the metaphorical expressions related to time in Early Modem literary works and Modem ones, which have been culled from English Metaphor Dictionary. The metaphors used to conceptualize the target domain of TIME in Early Modem English are [TIME IS A PERSON]and [TIME IS AN ALMIGHTY AGENT], while those in Modem English are [TIME IS A MOVING OBJECT/FLOWING FLUID], [TIME IS A PRISON]and [TIME IS A DESTROYER/THIEF]. This study shows that the differences in conceptual metaphors are closely related to the changes in English language user's cultural experiences. In other words, the conceptual metaphors of TIME in Early Modem English have stemmed from the Christian world view of medieval times and the experiences in the agrarian society, while those in Modem English have been derived from the knowledge and experience in the industrial society.
