There has been much controversy over the issue about an independent setup of a discipline for Women's/Gender Studies at the university since the mid-1980s. Many scholars and researchers in China have more often doubted about its sustainment if it deviates from mainstream to be so independent. In 2000, Li Xiaojiang, a prestigious expert and an originating founder of Chinese contemporary women's studies, set up the Center of Gender Studies (CGS) at Dalian University in China and began to explore a new way for discipline of Women's/Gender Studies into the mainstream of Chinese higher educational system.
With some experiences and lessons over the years, the CGS has been seeking the possibility of the combination and co-development of women's/gender studies with higher education reforms in an interdisciplinary context, exploring the function of women's studies and the future role of gender approaches in relation to mainstream Chinese education and academic life, trying to merge women's study achievements and a gender perspective into the existing higher education system. Also to establish the comprehensive nature of interdisciplinary that originally exists in women's/gender studies and create a sustainable foreground of personnel fostering curriculum construction and the interaction between campus and communities. In this article, the author tries to give a description of what has been done at Dalian University in China to develop the interdisciplinary work in women's/gender studies. She also focuses on the issues of what new ideas have been brought into the co-development of university and women's/gender studies. From this case, the author tries to tell that only has the women's/gender studies been infiltrating into the mainstream, can it develop sustainably and successfully at universities.
