The government selected 347 Woehak(倭學, The Japanese language passers in the official interpreters examination), during the late Joseon dynasty, which position had been increased about 20-30 passers (about 18-34%) each century after 17th century. Woehak accounts 13.5% among the Yeokkoa(譯科, passers of official interpreters examination) and also account 6.9% among the Jabkoa(雜科, passers of official specialist examination).
The number of families of Woehak passers was increased in the 19th century and it covered 107 clan seat at all. The powerful 15 family of them occupied more than 50% of Woehak passers and monopoling phenomena was increased. The 10 major families of them were Cheonnyeong Hyeonssi(川寧 玄氏, 7.5%), jeonjoo Yissi(全州 李氏, 5.2%), Milyang Byeonssi(密陽卞氏, 4.9%), Kyeongjoo Choissi, Cheongjoo Hanssi(慶州 崔氏, 淸州 韓氏, each 4.3%), Yeonghae Parkssi(寧海 朴氏, 3.7%), Milyang Parkssi, Namyang Hongssi(密陽 朴氏, 南陽 洪氏, each 3.2%), and 5 families: Woobong Kimssi, Mooan Parkssi, (牛峰 金氏, 務安 朴氏, each 2%) etc. They occupied about 40% of Woehak passers in all.
There were 84.4% temporally officers among Woehak passers in the late Joseon dynasty. Dongbanchea(東班遞兒) was 67.7% and Suhbanchea Dangsangkoan (西班遞兒 堂上官) was 16.7% among them.
The government did not give the honor due to their position and most of them received temporary post, Chea. Their position was most unstable. They were interested in the accumulation of wealth through intermediary trade in Woekoan(倭館, Japanese Residency in Busan) and in the East Asia.
When they pass in Woehak examination, the average age was 26.2 years old. That was 3.8 years more than general Yeokkoa passers. For the advancement, a few of Woehak passed other major, like Chinese language official interpreter examination later on.
