This thesis is to study the National Defense of Kijang Hyun in the 18th of Chosun Dynasty. And this archive preserved in library of the Academy of Korean studies.
In Chosun Dynasty, they made the so many kind of archive. Haeyu report is one of them. The 1764 Ha Myung Sang's Haeyu report has 18th of Chosun Dynasty's military service system. Such as military register, battleship, weapons, and all kind of military thing's.
As we know, During the Japanese Invasion. Chosun forces realized the best way to cope with Japanese forces in the land fight, is to introduce the technique of matchlock and develop the tactic against the enemy. And after the experience twice Manjurians Invasions of Chosun(丙子胡亂, 丁卯胡亂), the recognition on the national defense revived and started to make preliminary the facilities of the national defense. They changed Central and Local military system.
New Central military, what is called Okunyoung(五軍營), and Local military, what is called YonugㆍJinkun(營ㆍ鎭軍). These two military system supported by SamsuSokobop(三手束伍法). There's new military rule constructed with Posu(砲手), Salsu(殺手), Sasu(射手). And those new military system's main weapon was Chochong. That mean's Chochong was very important arm's and that making system produced more good property. And we can find same things happened The Ha Myung Sang's Haeyu report.
There's civilian or Konin(貢人) could made and bought Chochong in every countryside. Because during the Imjinwaelan make new policy the name of Walkwa(月課). Walkwa mean's which every country side maked themself about the arms. And same about the Chochong. So arms making system spray out to hole of country. Furthermore establishing technical manufacturing institution of firearms consolidated the military arms widely. And there's changed the Military structure and the system of weapon making. And we can find same things happened The Ha Myung Sang's Haeyu report.
The Chosun Dynasty's force, which were composed of farmer's. Generally they got two kind of military service. Such as Bunsangkun(番上軍) and Yubangkun(留防軍). Bunsangkun who lived in provinces, but came to serve in the capital and Yubangkun who served in provinces. And during the late Chosun dynasty increased that military services. And we can find same things happened The Ha Myung Sang's Haeyu report.
Finally, I hope this work is a sort of basic and rough surveying of the late Chosun Dynasty National defence system.
