The Hwang-tse Myths along with other similar myths have played a key role, as powerful means of government, in enhancing national solidarity and promoting patriotism. Despite their abundance and political importance, Chinese intellectuals' negligence of them has caused their demotion from their original splendor.
Some myths have been incorporated into literary works, resulting in myth literature. Others have manifested themselves as legends in history. Still others have become instruments of political propaganda. Chinese intellectuals have mixed politics and morality with myths, which is why Chinese myths are more difficult to study than those of other countries.
Instead of myths traditionally cherished throughout the many dynasties, contemporary China has adopted a new political ideology, that is, socialism. However as the history shows, socialism has turned out an invalid ideology in China.
