In North Korea, History of mythology studies are divided two periods. The one is 1960~1990' and the other is after 1990'.
At first period, studies were focused on searching historical facts which were reflected in myths. For example, Tangun myth, founding myth of Old-Chosen dynasty, is reflect of historical facts of military democratic stage. And through Chumong myth, founding myth of Kokuryo dynasty, and Descending myth of Son of Sky-God in Japan, we know processes, or routes of immigration.
But levels of understanding myth were so poor that north Korean scholars did not dig up multiple dimensions of myths and cultural meaning of myths.
In second period, there was no researches of myth, as first period. But mythical and legendary beings, who found new dynasties in Pyung-yang province, were directly regarded as historical characters, and their tombs are rebuilt. For example, tombs of founder-king of Kokuryo dynasty and founder-king of Old-Chosen dynasty were rebuilt as grand size.
Why rebuilding tombs of mythological founder-king is related to situation of North Korea. At that time, North Korea felt isolation in international relationships, because of decline of communist states. Further more, he experienced economic difficulties. So North Korea try to endure these difficulties through nationalism. Namely through the worship of mythological founder-kings, who built new dynasties in Pyung-yang province, confirm national identity and nation's homogeneity.
