Kang Hang(姜沆) had stayed in Japan for four years after he had been captured as prisoner by Japanese pirates at the time of JungYuJaeRan(丁酉再亂). The times in Japan as prisoner had been the hardest days in his life. The work in which he had revealed his experience in Japan at that time is Gan-Yang-Rok. Therefore, the Gan-Yang-Rok is the very material through which we can clearly find out who he was.
The result of my study so far is summarized as below.
First, it is assumed that the writer of the existing oldest version of original copy of Naesansowon(內山書院) is Min Yeo-Im(閔汝任, 1559-1627). In particular, the content of this copy is assumed not to have been greatly different from that of the original copy written by Kang, Hang. Also, it is much probable that the copy had been the draft copy of the printed edition.
Second, when looking at the copy(Paragraph 1, Chapter 21) borne by the Academy of Korean Studies, we can find out that the Gan-Yang-Rok had been shared among intellectuals and, especially, regarded as important material to access information on Japanese piarates.
Third, the contents of the printed Can- Yang-Rok, which is composed of five chapters of "ChukJungBongSo"(賊中封疏), "ChukJungMoonKyunRok"(賊中聞見錄), "KoBuInKeok"(告?人檄), "YeSeungJeongWonGyeSa"(詣承政院啓辭) and "SeopNanSaJeok"(涉亂事跡), can be largely divided into two characteristics, i.e. contents focused on 'reporting' and those on 'experience'. The order of the contents of the printed edition largely follows the time of happenings, while allocating the experience expressed in more detail into the front part when writing same experience twice. This is because the writers including Yoon Seen-Geo had edited the draft version of Kang Hang in a rational way.
Forth, in the 'contents focused on reports' of the Gan-Yang-Rok, Kang Hang has 'sustained objective and calm attitude', he did not hide the 'grief and fury from prisoned life' in the 'contents focused on experiences'. The reason why Kang Hang had sustained objective attitude toward the Japanese pirates lied on his passionate patriotism to let his mother country accurate information on Japanese pirates and his belief that those information would be helpful to his mother country. However, in "SeopNanSaJeok", his grief had been greatly expressed from the death and dispersion of his family, and his homesick was clearly revealed in his relationship with other prisoners.
Recently, the lies of Japan on Korea-Japan history has made trouble in the relationship between Korea and Japan. In this time, the objective and calm attitude of Kang, Hang to better know his enemy in his hardest days of life glitters more than ever.
